Job Description

 

Cooperative for Assistance and Relief Everywhere (CARE), Inc. doing business as CARE International in Ghana is seeking talented, motivated and innovative Markets and Livelihoods Specialist (M&LS)– PROSPER III Project, who will work closely with the Project Manager (PM) by providing technical guidance, supervision and support to all aspects of livelihoods and assess to market on the project. The Markets and Livelihood Specialist will lead the development and implementation of value chains and market assessment tools and approaches, market literacy, input and output market linkages and training for participants in project communities.
The PROSPER III Project seeks to increase food production, productivity and income in ways that are resilient to climate change whiles empowering women, improving nutrition-sensitive agriculture, and reducing environmental impact reaching a direct target of 95,200 people. The project will be managed from the Kumasi sub-office of CARE International in Ghana.

Increase women’s leadership and agency, increase women’s access to and control of productive resources, Enhance women’s access to inclusive markets and Improve strategic partnerships and advocacy.

JOB PROFILE
The Markets and Livelihoods Specialist (M&LS) will be based in the Kumasi Sub-Office in the Ashanti Region of Ghana. The Markets and Livelihoods Specialist (M&LS) will cover project implementation in project districts in Western North, Ashanti and Central regions. S/He will report directly to the Project Manager.
Some Key Responsibilities for this role:
  • Develop Livelihoods’ methodology for market assessment, business development programming and the supervision of an extensive market assessment.
  • Research and identify new business opportunities – including new markets, growth areas, trends, customers, partnerships, products and services – or new ways of reaching existing markets and link farmers and partners to them.
  • Create or rely on existing market platform at the district level for farmers to effectively engage with the buyers.
  • Facilitate the formation of producer associations in project communities to ensure the needs of both buyers and sellers are met.
  • Provide technical support to project beneficiaries to effectively engage with the identified markets within the specific value chains.
  • Develop promotional materials and marketing strategies for the smallholders, product promoters and associated businesses.
  • Conduct research in project areas to identify sustainable and viable income generating activities.
  • Develop livelihood promotion capacities within the program, partners, and at community levels to protect livelihoods and achieve food security.
  • Provide capacity building and training of CARE and partners for livelihoods interventions.
  • Develop commercially viable livelihood models to train project participants.
  • Develop market-based approaches to improving the project beneficiaries’ access to production materials.

 

Required Skills or Experience

 

Knowledge
  • Very good knowledge in enterprise business development policies and procedures including range of business support services such as BDS, financing, sales and marketing.
Experience
  • At least 7 years direct experience in relevant working areas (technical support to project activities implementation, working with stakeholders, market and business development.
  • Minimum 5 years of relevant work experience in market-based approaches including market development programming, market assessments and value chain assessments.
  • Very good professional experience in market systems development and facilitation.
  • Experience in facilitating stakeholders’ engagement including assessment of incentives and capacity, specifically facilitating private sector involvement.
  • Proven experience with marketing strategy development and marketing plan development

Qualifications 
  • At least first degree in Agricultural Economics and Livelihood Studies, Economics, Marketing, Entrepreneurship and other related field.
